MAS964 (H): SIMPLICITY DESIGN STUDIO
Problem Set 3: TEXTUAL SIMPLICITY

Description:

We explore the interaction design space defined by several simplicity-related axes such as [ specific - generic ], [ concrete - abstract ],  [ special/single purpose - general/multi purpose ], [ familiar/known - new/strange ], [ foreground - background ], [ high - low resolution ], and [ more physical - more digital ].  Especially, we focus on the issue of consistency between the double interaction loops: physical feedback loop and digital feedback loop, that is critical for the interaction design that blends physicality and digitality and to accomplish the goal of simplicity.

Schedule:
2/19  11:30 am - 12:50 am: Introduction of design principles [ppt]
2/24  10 am - noon: Warming-up design exercises
2/26  10 am - 11:30 am: Problem set review

Ready a URL for class on 2/26 (Thu) to present your solutions for:

Problem 1 (50 points)

Design physical/digital interactions with five small objects on a table with digital shadows, and explain the design rationale using the axes we discuss on 2/19.

Problem 2 (50 points)

Extend the design of above interactions for collaboration among multiple users between 2 and 12.  Explain how your design handles the complexity of muti-objects/multi-user interactions.  Use drawings, animation, video, or real physical mock up.
